Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said that a certain quarter is creating a heated political atmosphere in the country through misleading statements. He further said, “We want an end to this situation. We certainly want the national parliamentary election to be held in February next year. But before the national election, by November, we demand a referendum on the July Declaration and July National Charter. The people of the country know that everyone agrees on the matter of the referendum. However, one particular party wants the referendum to be held on the same day as the national election, which is completely unrealistic. We demand that the referendum be held by November, prior to the national election.”
He was speaking at a press conference held at 6:00 p.m. on November 2 at Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary Generals Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan and Maulana Abdul Halim, Central Executive Council members Principal Md. Shahabuddin, Mobarak Hossain, and Ameer of Dhaka City South Nurul Islam Bulbul were present on the occasion. The program was hosted by Jamaat-e-Islami's central executive council member and party’s media and publicity secretary Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda.
Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher further said, “We stand for national unity. I call upon the BNP leaders to come to the table for constructive discussions in a positive spirit and find a just political solution to all problems. The people of this country want solutions to the ongoing crises. They want national unity. National unity is the only path to overcome the current situation.”
He said, “Some quarters are claiming that the referendum would require around three thousand crore taka. In response, I would like to say that the money needed for the referendum is negligible compared to the national necessity of overcoming this crisis. The fascists have laundered so much money abroad that the amount is enough to hold a thousand referendums.”
He further said, “BNP is now demanding that Jamaat-e-Islami be banned. In response to their statement, I would like to ask — if Jamaat had been banned in 1991, could BNP have formed a government with Jamaat’s support? If Jamaat had not supported them in forming the government, would BNP have reached its present stage? The answer is: certainly not. BNP is now proving its ingratitude by making malicious remarks against Jamaat-e-Islami, similar to the language once used by fallen dictators. They have now assumed the role of the fascist Awami League. The current crisis in the country has been created by BNP itself.bJamaat has never engaged in the politics of deception, fraud, or hypocrisy. It is BNP that is demonstrating deceit, betrayal, and ingratitude.”
Dr. Taher said, “In the past 54 years, power has changed hands repeatedly, but the fate of the people has not changed. Whoever came to power resorted to deceit, fraud, looting, and nepotism. The people want an end to this situation. The warriors of July want change.”
He said, “From the very beginning, BNP has shown reluctance toward reforms. They once claimed to be the pioneers of reform, but in reality, they have always opposed it. In no country in the world has there ever been a referendum on a note of dissent.”
He further said, “BNP leaders are making false statements against Jamaat and falsely accusing it of creating crises. But in reality, it is they who are misleading the nation with falsehoods.”
He said, “Jamaat-e-Islami never makes false statements. BNP Secretary General himself signed the July Declaration. Now, by making false statements to mislead the people, they have entangled themselves in difficulty — yet they are blaming Jamaat for putting them in trouble. In fact, they themselves are in trouble because of their falsehoods. One BNP leader has even said they do not want reforms, the July Declaration, or a referendum. Our response is: when and where has Jamaat ever said it does not want reforms, the July Declaration, or a referendum? If BNP has any evidence to support their claim, they should present it before the nation. In truth, it is they who have fallen into difficulty by making such misleading statements.”
He further said, “Dr. Yunus’s government has assumed power with the support of the people. There is no question about his honesty, competence, sincerity, or dedication. But BNP is trying to exploit the situation by making misleading statements to embarrass the government. He urged the government to remain alert in this regard and said that the government must act impartially. He also called upon the interim government not to fall into any traps laid by any quarter.”
