Police launches nationwide arrest drives against Jamaat and Chhatrashibir activists; Hamidur Rahman Azad condemns

Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad has issued the following statement on 1 November 2019 protesting and condemning the arrests of Jamaat and Chhatrashibir activists from various places across the country including Khulna, Dhaka, Chapai Nawabganj and Barisal.

“Police have unjustifiably arrested Khulna city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Master Shafiqul Alam and 2 other Jamaat activists, Dhaka city South Jamaat’s working committee member Abdus Sabur Fakir and Farid Hossain, Kodomtoli Thana Jamaat Ameer Maulana Amirul Islam Bahar and 5 other activists and another 11 Jamaat-Shibir activists from Chapai Nawabganj and two from Barisal city. I am vehemently protesting all these arrest incidents. The government has been torturing and oppressing the Jamaat-Shibir activists in an unprecedented way. The authority cannot tolerate any peaceful protests or political program. These incidents of crackdown are exposing the extreme undemocratic face of the government.

The crackdown and repression of the government have exceeded all the limits. The government is murdering one after one leader of Jamaat-e-Islami in a planned way. They are not allowing the opposition to hold peaceful protest demonstration. By carrying out such consecutive oppression, the government has created a suffocating situation nationwide. People have no safety and security now. The ruling party goons are killing people in broad daylight. But the government is not taking any punitive measures against them. There is no existence of rule of law and democracy in the country. Under the circumstances, I am urging the fellow countrymen to launch systematic movement against the torture and repression of the government.

I am calling upon the authorities concerned to stop crackdown and to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir including Khulna city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Master Shafiqul Alam immediately.
