Central Women’s Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Principal Nurunnisa Siddika has expressed deep concern, outrage, and strong condemnation over the attack carried out by Jubo Dal activists during a regular Qur’an study session organized by the Women’s Division of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at the Khan residence near Radigo Ful in the 9th Ward (Gulisa) of Balia Union, Chandpur Sadar Upazila.
According to local sources, on Sunday, November 2, a regular weekly and monthly Qur’an study and training program that has been running there for over 20 years was in progress when a group of young men led by Md. Aslam, the Organizing Secretary of the local Jubo Dal unit, attempted to enter the house. When the veiled women present tried to stop them, the men began using obscene language and tried to record videos of the women. At one point, they started pushing and kicking the door, causing chaos. Eventually, the attackers left the scene in the face of strong protests from the women participants.
Protesting the incident, Principal Nurunnisa Siddika said in a statement, “This new wave of autocratic and terrorist attacks in post–July 24 revolutionary Bangladesh, which was freed from dictatorship, is extremely tragic and alarming. Attacking veiled women during a Qur’an study session is a heinous and condemnable act.”
Urging the authorities to take action, she said, “Those involved in this terrorist activity by Jubo Dal must be arrested immediately and brought under the rule of law.”
She further stated, “No one can stop Islamic da’wah activities by attacking women’s religious education and Qur’anic discussions. This attack proves that a morally and ideologically defeated group is trying to create unrest in society to preserve its existence.
We strongly condemn and protest this despicable attack, demand exemplary punishment for the perpetrators, and express our sympathy to the women who were physically and mentally traumatized.”
