Police assaulted on-duty night guard in locked Jamaat office

Secretary General condemns police’s brutal actions; calls to open party’s central office

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 22nd September, 2017 protesting and condemning the brutal police actions as 30/35 members of Ramna Police station has entered into the central office of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, located in Mogbazar of the capital on 21st September at 11 pm and mercilessly beat the night guard namely Md. Ibrahim who was discharging his duty over there.

‘Policemen entered into Jamaat’s central office on 21st September night and assaulted security guard Md. Ibrahim brutally, which is totally unlawful and inhuman.

The countrymen are well acknowledged that since 19th September of 2011, the incumbent authoritarian government has sealed off the Jamaat central office. They have not been allowing any party members and activists to get into the office. Jamaat-e-Islami is a legal and legitimate party of the country. The government cannot keep the party office of a legal party forcefully closed for years. The authority has violated the domestic law and the constitution by sealing off the Jamaat central office. The government could not do such an unlawful task if they have minimum respect towards democracy and rule of law.

Only the security guard and the night guards are discharging their duties at the Jamaat central office now. In that closed office, some 30/35 policemen came on 21st September and asked him to open the main gate. Night guard Ibrahim did accordingly even though the policemen verbally and physically assaulted him. Ibrahim became critically wounded. We do not have the word to condemn such an inhuman act of the police members.

I am drawing the attention of the concerned authorities not to recur such an unexpected incident and urging them to open the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami immediately.”
