Hundreds of houses torched, vandalized and looted in Rangamati; Secretary General expresses concern

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 8th June, 2017 expressing deep concern at the incidents of torching hundreds of houses, attack, arson, vandalism and looting in Langadu Upazila of the Rangamati district centring the murder of the Juba League leader Nurul Islam Nayan several days back.

“The incident of attacking and torching around 250 houses of the indigenous communities centring the murder of Jubo League leader Nurul Islam Nayan is very brutal and condemnable.

It is absolutely regrettable that following the murder of Jubo League leader, many houses and establishments of the tribal communities have come under attack. Such a violent clash erupted centring a murder, which can never be supported. We believe in the harmony between the Bengalis and the indigenous communities.

Such an incident is not for maiden time in Bangladesh. All the localities of Bangladesh have been suffering due to severe clashes and violence between different quarters particularly among the minorities, political opponents, murders, rape, looting and arson. These misdeeds became the regular phenomenon of the ruling party. Though the leaders and workers of this party are verbally talking about maintaining order, but practically law itself became helpless victim to their wrongdoings.

I am urging the concerned authorities to conduct a judicial investigation into the the incidents of torching hundreds of houses, attack, arson, vandalism and looting in Langadu Upazila of the Rangamati district centring the murder of the Juba League leader Nurul Islam Nayan to ensure exemplary punishment of the criminals and also to pay due compensation to the affected peoples whose houses and establishments have been demolished in recent times.”
