The National Consensus Commission has worked for no one’s interest, claims Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher sais that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami wants a free, fair, and impartial national election to be held in February next year. However, before the election, Jamaat-e-Islami demands a national referendum in November on the implementation order of the National Consensus Commission’s recommendations. The upcoming national election must be held on the basis of the order passed through that referendum.

He made these remarks while speaking at an emergency press conference held at Al-Falah Auditorium, Moghbazar, Dhaka, at 3:00 PM on October 30.

Among others, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman, Assistant Secretary Generals Maulana ATM Masum and Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad were present at the press meet. The event was hosted by Jamaat-e-Islami's central executive council member and party’s Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Department Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda.

Dr. Taher further said that some quarters are spreading rumors about the upcoming election and creating doubts and confusion through fabricated statements. He urged everyone to remain vigilant and cautious about such activities.

He said that 31 political parties participated in the discussions of the National Consensus Commission, and through extensive dialogue and deliberation, the parties reached agreement on about 80 issues. Following that, all parties signed the July Declaration.

Dr. Taher emphasized that the National Consensus Commission did not work in favor of any particular group or party but made efforts to establish national unity involving all parties. However, a certain group is now trying to sabotage this unity by spreading false and fabricated statements to create confusion. He called upon everyone to remain restrained in the interest of national unity, referendum, and parliamentary elections, saying, “We must not allow national unity to be disrupted in any way. We do not want fascism to return we want democracy. He urged all concerned to avoid any actions that might obstruct democracy.

Dr. Taher further stated that it is natural for every political party to contest the election under its own symbol, but the BNP does not want this. He expressed hope that the Election Commission will rise above partisanship and perform its duties with neutrality, and without implementing the agenda of any particular party. He added, “The country belongs to all of us; therefore, we all must work together to protect it and establish democracy in Bangladesh.”

At the end of his speech, Dr. Taher answered various questions from journalists.
