On 29 October (Wednesday) at 9:30 a.m., a delegation of the Commonwealth’s Pre-Election Assessment Mission held an important meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at the party’s central office in Moghbazar. The delegation was led by Linford Andrews, Head of the Commonwealth’s Electoral Support Division and the Pre-Election Assessment. Other members of the Commonwealth team included Dr. Dinusha Panditaratne, Ms. Nancy Kanyago, Mr. Sarthak Roy, and Ms. Madonna Lynch.
The meeting was held in a very cordial and friendly atmosphere.
During the meeting, they held detailed discussions on the upcoming national election in Bangladesh, strengthening democracy, consolidating constitutional and democratic institutions, and the progress towards ensuring a free, fair, and participatory election. They also discussed issues related to a level playing field and the law-and-order situation ahead of the polls. The delegation mentioned that the Commonwealth will send an observer team for the upcoming election.
Among the Jamaat leaders, its Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum, Central Executive Committee Member and Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Department Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda, and Central Executive Committee Members Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan Milon and Mobarak Hossain were present on the occasion.
