Jamaat-e-Islami’s delegation holds a meeting with advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan

The construction work of the 50-kilometer-long Dhaka–Sylhet Highway, stretching from the Ashuganj River Port to Akhaura Land Port, began in 2020 and was scheduled to be completed by 2023. However, despite the deadline having passed, the work is yet to be finished. An Indian contracting firm is carrying out this four-lane project. Simultaneously, the development work of the Dhaka–Sylhet six-lane highway project is also underway. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of necessary coordination between the two projects. As a result, trucks carrying sand and bricks are being parked indiscriminately, causing long traffic congestion. Consequently, passengers and transport workers traveling along the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway are facing severe suffering.

In view of this acute public suffering, on Thursday, 9 October, a four-member delegation of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by the party's Assistant Secretary General and Head of the Central Publicity and Media Department Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair met with Honorable Advisor to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan.

The delegation included Jamaat-e-Islami's central executive council member and Dhaka North City Ameer, and Jamaat’s nominated MP candidate for Sylhet-6 (Golapganj–Beanibazar) Md. Selim Uddin, and Supreme Court lawyer and Jamaat’s nominated MP candidate for Sunamganj-2 (Dirai–Shalla) Advocate Shishir Monir, and Jamaat’s nominated MP candidate for Habiganj-2 (Baniachong–Ajmiriganj) Advocate Sheikh Zillur Rahman Azmi.

During the meeting, the Jamaat-e-Islami delegation informed the Honorable Advisor that a terrible traffic jam has persisted for the past three days over approximately a Kilometre stretch from the Ashuganj roundabout to Madhabpur in Habiganj. The slow pace of construction has worsened the situation. Thousands of vehicles are stuck in the congestion, and passengers and transport workers are enduring extreme suffering. Many passengers have been forced to walk to their destinations, and journeys that should take only a few hours are now taking an entire day.

The Jamaat delegation stated that alleviating public suffering is a constitutional responsibility of the government. Reminding him of that responsibility, they submitted the following proposals to mitigate the situation:

Proposals:

1. Ensure effective coordination between the four-lane and six-lane projects to accelerate construction work.

2. Recruit additional manpower to speed up the construction process.

3. Increase the number of train coaches on the Dhaka–Sylhet route as an alternative mode of transportation.

Expressing a positive attitude toward these proposals, Honorable Advisor Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan said, “The government has already taken effective measures to resolve the traffic congestion on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway. It is expected that the situation will improve soon, and public suffering will be alleviated.”
