An election under the existing system will give birth to a new form of fascism

-Professor Mia Golam Porwar

Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar remarked that there are speculations in the political arena that the July Declaration reflects the ideology of a particular political party. He said, “The nation was waiting for the July Declaration. This will be recorded as a significant contribution in the country's history. However, if the blood and lives of hundreds go in vain, it may give rise to another form of fascism.”

He alleged, “The July Declaration did not include crucial issues such as the judicial killings, the Pilkhana massacre, the Shapla Chattar incident, and the contributions of teachers. The aspirations associated with July were not reflected in the Declaration. The Declaration must be revised to incorporate these matters.”

Mia Golam Porwar further said, “The contributions of Islamists have not been recognized in the July Declaration. The Declaration prepared by the Chief Advisor is incomplete. If elections are held under the current system, a new fascism may emerge. Although the Declaration was considered positive during the election period, holding elections without necessary reforms would be a betrayal of the people.” He called for holding the national election under a non-partisan government by establishing a legal foundation for the ‘July Charter’ based on its principles.

He made these remarks as the keynote speaker at a discussion meeting titled “The Role and Responsibilities of Students, Teachers, and the People in the Historic July Uprising of 2024”, organized by the Bangladesh Ideal Teachers' Federation (Adarsha Shikhok Parishad) on Thursday, August 7 at 3 PM at the Abdus Salam Hall (3rd Floor) of the National Press Club.

The meeting was presided over by Dr. M. Korban Ali, President of the Federation, and moderated by Professor ABM Fazlul Karim, General Secretary of the entity. The chief guest at the event was Professor Mujibur Rahman, Central Advisor of the Bangladesh Ideal Teachers' Federation and former Member of Parliament.

Professor Mujibur Rahman said, “Fascism lurks in every corner of the state. A national election is not possible without taking action against them. Ensuring the quality of education in every sector is an inevitable demand of the time. The workers, laborers, and teachers—who were the catalysts for the second wave of independence—have been neglected in the July Declaration. Therefore, this hollow declaration must be revised in the interest of the nation and the people.”

The special guest at the event was Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dhaka South City. Among the other speakers were Principal Md. Sirajul Islam, President of the Bangladesh Kindergarten Teachers' Association; GM Alauddin, President of the Bangladesh Ibtedayi Madrasa Teachers' Association; Principal Dr. Md. Sakhawat Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Primary Teachers’ Association; Principal Md. Munjurul Haque, President of the Bangladesh Secondary School Teachers’ Association; Professor Nur Nabi Manik, President of the Bangladesh College Teachers’ Association; Principal Dr. Maulana Shahjahan Madani, President of the Bangladesh Madrasa Teachers’ Association; and Professor Dr. Umar Ali, President of the Bangladesh Public University Teachers’ Association.

The summary of the discussion was presented by Dr. M. Korban Ali, President of the Bangladesh Ideal Teachers’ Federation. He said, “Since August 5, teachers from various organizations have stopped teaching in classrooms and have taken to the street’s day and night, seeking to satisfy their hunger. They have been placing their rightful demands before the government, yet the government has taken no effective steps.

Meanwhile, teachers are falling ill standing in the rain, under the scorching sun, and being bitten by mosquitoes.”

He strongly urged the government to accept the logical and justified demands of all teachers' organizations. He added, “The United Non-MPO Unity Council, the Independent Ibtedayi Madrasa Teachers' Association, and other teacher groups have long been waging movements on the streets to realize their demands. The government should immediately accept these demands.”

Teachers from various educational institutions, students, journalists, and prominent citizens participated in the event. Speakers called upon the new generation to prepare themselves in the spirit of united mass resistance.
