On Tuesday, July 1st, at 7:30 PM, a view exchange meeting was held at the central office of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami between the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and the representatives of the Gono Odhikar Parishad. The meeting featured important discussions on the country’s ongoing political situation.
Following the meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and former Member of Parliament Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher addressed journalists in a brief press briefing. He said, “We discussed the overall situation and several key issues. Both parties expressed hope that they would work together in the future to overcome the national crisis.”
He further stated, “Several matters concerning the Consensus Commission were also discussed. In order to reflect the views of all political parties, both our parties have demanded that the upcoming national elections be held under the Proportional Representation (PR) system. Additionally, due to the ineffectiveness of the local government system, the people are facing various problems and being deprived of civic services. In this context, we have demanded that local government elections be held before the national parliamentary elections. If these demands are not fulfilled prior to the elections, we, along with all like-minded parties, will initiate efforts to exert pressure on the government to fulfill these demands.”
In response to a question from journalists, he said, “There have been discussions between Jamaat-e-Islami and Gono Odhikar Parishad regarding the formation of an electoral alliance for the upcoming national election that includes Islamic parties and other anti-fascist parties.”
In a brief statement, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur emphasized the importance of implementing the ‘July Charter’ and the ‘July Declaration’.
Representing Jamaat-e-Islami at the meeting were Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, former MP Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad, Maulana Abdul Halim, and Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair.
Representing the Gono Odhikar Parishad were its President Nurul Haque Nur, Spokesperson Farooq Hasan, and senior council members Abu Hanif, Shakiluzzaman, Abduz Zaher, Habibur Rahman Riju, and Rabiul Hasan.
