Jamaat-e-Islami officially regains registration with electoral symbol

-Professor Mia Golam Porwar,

On June 1, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh issued a unanimous verdict ordering the restoration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration along with its electoral symbol, the “scales.” Following this, on June 4, the Election Commission made a policy decision to reinstate the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with its party symbol “scales,” and today, June 24, it has officially implemented the decision by issuing a gazette notification.

At a press briefing held around 7:45 PM on June 24 at the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami, the party’s Secretary General, and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, stated, “By the special grace of Almighty Allah, the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami along with its electoral symbol ‘scales’ has officially been returned to us today by the Election Commission through a gazette notification based on the court’s verdict. For this, we express our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the Almighty Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Alhamdulillah.”

Dear members of the press,
You are conscious and conscientious members of society. Through you, the thoughts, sentiments, political consciousness, voting rights, and aspirations of Bangladesh’s 180 million people are reflected to the nation and the world. That is why you are referred to as the conscience of the nation. The people of this country are aware of the history of how the fascist Awami regime oppressed Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, a registered and democratic political party, and took our legal rights away.

Let me inform you that on November 4, 2008, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was lawfully registered with the Election Commission under the country's registration law. However, unfortunately, on October 28, 2018, this right was taken away from us through a court order. Based on a writ petition filed in 2009, the court issued a ruling in 2018 that cancelled our registration.

He further said, “We have engaged in a long legal struggle. Finally, as you know, on June 1, 2025, after an extended legal battle in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, we rightfully regained our lost rights. Based on that court order, the Election Commission today issued a gazette notification officially restoring our registration along with our party symbol.”

Respected journalist friends,
In this long legal battle to reclaim our democratic, legal, and constitutional rights that were unjustly taken away, we received support from some of the country’s most esteemed legal professionals. Members of the media also extended their support. By presenting the truth and standing on the side of justice and fairness, you have used your conscience to uphold the dignity of the journalistic profession. For that, we express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all of you.

Once again, and above all, I repeatedly express my gratitude to Almighty Allah. Millions of people across Bangladesh have prayed for the restoration of our just rights, and I sincerely thank them for their support. On behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, we extend our gratitude to all dignified individuals, well-wishers, expatriates, and citizens at home and abroad.
