Central Majlish-e-Shura expresses concern over the ongoing gas, power and severe financial crisis

A meeting of the Central Majlish-e-Shura of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was held with party’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman in the chair. The meeting has expressed deep concern over the gas and power crisis, subsequent production loss in industries and ongoing severe financial crisis and adopted the following proposal:

“Central Majlish-e-Shura of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is expressing deep concern at the gas and power crisis, subsequent production loss in industries and ongoing severe financial crisis. The whole country particularly Chittagong region is suffering terribly due to gas crisis. Household gas or industrial gas, nothing is available. Factories cannot operate its activities. In want of gas and power, three urea fertilizer factory production has been stopped. LNG supply has reduced 60 to 70 percent so far. Gas and electricity crisis have been severe even in Dhaka and the suburb areas. Earlier, two floating terminals of Moheshkhali supplied 85 crore cubic gas every day. Now only 35 cubic gas is being supplied now days, which is half of the previous quantity. As a result, the production rate in the factories have come down to half. Due to technical faults in the LNG terminal, right now the country is experiencing 700 megawatt loadshedding daily. There is no sign to get rid of such terrible situation soon.

In addition, the financial crisis of the country has become severe. Export business have reduced significantly. The import activities are also being hampered because of the dollar crisis. The banks are also suffering from liquidity crisis. Reports of several dailies state that, without any accountabilities, cash are being provided to some Islami Banks, the news added. The economists already expressed their concern in this regard.

Although the government hurriedly declared a new currency policy but it failed to bring any significant or positive change in the economy. At least 10-15 banks, have reached at risky levels. Due to liquidity crisis, the government’s flow of credits is being hampered. As a result, the entire economy and industrial sectors are suffering badly. Various banks have spent almost 2 lakh and 27 thousand crore taka to buy dollars in last one and half year.

The government has made the country bankrupt by destroying the national economy as they remained adamant to stay in office forcefully. Under the circumstances, the only solution is to dissolve the parliament, and arranging a new election under a caretaker government. Otherwise, there is no way to resolve these crises. In this backdrop, central Majlish-e-Shura of Jamaat-e-Islami is urging the government to accept the people’s demand and to take necessary steps for holding a free, fair, credible and inclusive election.
