Majlish-e-Shura calls for the restoration of the caretaker government system

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

A session of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s central Majlish-e-Shura was held with the party’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman in the chair. Central Majlish-e-Shura emphasized restoring the caretaker government system to hold a free, fair, and credible election. After a long discussion, the Majlish-e-Shura adopted the following proposals:

Central Majlish-e-Shura has been observing that the Awami League government came to power in 2008 through an orchestrated election under a military-backed caretaker government. That election was so designed that in some constituencies, votes were cast over 107 percent. Coming to office, the Awami League government hijacked the voting rights of the people in a planned way. To stay in power, the Awami League government canceled the caretaker system. Although, they performed strikes for 173 days from 1991 to 1996. The caretaker system was subsequently included in the constitution following a movement, tons of sacrifice, blood, lives, and wealth. But giving the excuse of the court’s verdict, the fascist government annulled the caretaker system in 2011. But the fact is, even in the verdict, the apex court recommended holding the next two parliamentary elections under the caretaker government. Because of such an initiative, a severe stalemate was created in the political arena. As a result, an atmosphere was created for holding a farcical and one-sided election.

In the last 15 years of tenure, the incumbent authoritarian government has destroyed the total electoral procedures, along with democracy, the rule of law, human rights, freedom of speech, and other basic rights. They have made the total electoral system a farce just to retain power.

Almost all political parties, intellectuals, journalists, academicians, authors, researchers, and other walks desired a free, fair, and inclusive election. The democratic nations also expressed the desire for holding a participator and fair election. Central Majlish-e-Shura opined that the existing crisis can come to an end if the authority pays heed to the public view and establish a non-party neutral government.

Jamaat-e-Islami’s central Majlish-e-Shura urged all parties, people of all walks, and the people to launch a massive movement for establishing a caretaker government in order to secure people’s voting rights. They also called upon the government to stop torture and repression and to arrange an election under a neutral government.
