Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 24th April, 2024 protesting and condemning unjust arrests of 4 people from Modhukhali and one from neighbouring Boalmari upazila of Faridpur district.

“On last 18th April, without any investigation, two Muslim brothers were beaten to death brutally centering a reported incident of torching an idol inside a temple in Panchapalli village of Dumain union in Modhukhali Upazila of Faridpur district. Then on 23rd April, a peaceful demonstration was organized in Modhukhali Upazila of Faridpur district protesting that heinous incident. But again, without any provocation, police opened fire against the agitating people that left many people wounded.

Centering the incident, police subsequently arrested 4 people from Modhukhali upazila and one from neighbouring Boalmari upazila. The arrest drives are still going on and as a result, local people cannot stay in their homes. Police’s such arrest drives are really inhuman, unlawful and ill-motivated.

Whoever had committed the heinous incident in Modhukhali, police failed to arrest them. Instead, police are detaining those people who are innocent and making demonstrations protesting the incident. Police's such roles are unjustified, unexpected and unprecedented. We are demanding immediate release of all the detainees and simultaneously calling for a judicial investigation into the incident to ensure exemplary punishment of the offenders.
