Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 25th January, 2024 expressing deep concern as WASA has finalized a proposal to increase water price once again.

“WASA’s proposal to increase water price will be a major blow against the common people. Already, the people are severely suffering due to price hike of the essentials, power and gas crisis. In such a critical situation, WASA has proposed to increase water price which really intolerable for the people. It has been reported that category wise, WASA has proposed increase price from 25 to 149 percent. It should be mentioned that, in last 14 years under the tenure of the present government, WASA has increased water price for 14 times. If the government could check the corruption and system loss, then water supply to the citizens is possible in less price. But continuing the corruption in same pace, the government is proposing to increase water price. In one hand, it will create disastrous impact upon the people and on the other, it is ignoring the sufferings of the general masses. The government feels no liability towards the people and it is evident.

I am urging the government to cancel the proposal of increasing water price for the greater interest of the people.
