30 Jamaat leaders and activists arrested nationwide; Acting Secretary General condemns

-Maulana ATM Masum

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 2nd January, 2024 protesting and condemning the unjust arrests of 30 Jamaat leaders and activists in last couple of days from various places of the country.

The tyrant government has been arresting and harassing the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and other opposition parties for last 15 years. An anarchic situation has been created in the country due to torture, repression, corruption and misrule of the government. Thousands of leaders and activists are being detained and harassed in connection with hundreds of false cases and subsequently hundreds of thousands of opposition activists are being forced to stay outside their houses. Women and kids are being threatened and intimidated. Furniture and other households accessories are being vandalised and ransacked during the raids. A reign of terror has been established throughout the country by conducting massive arrest drives. In last couple of days, 30 Jamaat and Chhatrashibir leaders and activists have been arrested including Dhaka south city's Hazaribagh East thana Ameer Shahidul Islam Sohel, Barguna Sadar upazila Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Abdul Latif and Dhaka south city's Demra middle thana Ameer Mohammad Ali. I am condemning their unlawful arrest drives and ongoing oppression of the government.

The incumbent government has confiscated people's votes and other basic rights. Public lives and properties are not secured anymore. People are not allowed to express themselves. National economy is at the verge of collapse due to looting and corruption of the government. I am urging the countrymen to raise their voices against the torture and repression of the government.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities to stop vengeance and harassment and to release all detained political leaders and activists including Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman immediately.
