Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 2nd January, 2024 expressing deep concern as a Dhaka Court sentenced Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus with six months imprisonment.

"Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a global figure. He has brought prestige and honor for Bangladesh. The government has filed a preplanned case against him. Earlier, several ministers and ruling party leaders made aggressive statement against him. Even, while inaugurating the Padma Bridge, the Prime Minister also expressed desire to throw him down from the bridge to the river. Such realities substantiate that, Dr Yunus has become the victim of government's vengeance.

The courts of Bangladesh have been sentencing significant number of political leaders in recent times. Such verdicts have also created lots of questions among the people. Nothing exceptional happened to Dr. Yunus's case. The government has been implicating popular personalities with various false cases to destroy the leadership of the country. As a part of the same notorious plan, the government earlier had executed Jamaat Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and other senior leaders. World renowned preacher of Quran, Allama Delwar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced to life time imprisonment and finally he had to die in prison due to negligible treatment.

Dr Muhammad Yunus is an internationally acclaimed person. He also became a victim of false cases and harassment. We are urging the government to stop harassment against Dr Muhammad Yunus immediately.
