Nationwide repression and arrest drive against opposition men continues; Acting Secretary General protests

-Maulana ATM Masum

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 19th December, 2023 protesting and condemning police’s attack, arrest drives, torture and repression nationwide.

The present government has snatched democracy and people’s voting rights away. Public lives and properties are not safe anymore. People are not allowed to speak out. The opposition leaders and activists are being arrested without any valid reason. Their houses and offices are being vandalized and ransacked. The government has turned the whole nation into a big prison by continuing arrest drives. Police have arrested 44 Jamaat and Chhatrashibir leaders and activists in last two days including Rajshahi city’s Damkura thana Jamaat Ameer Abdul Latif. Satkhira district Jamaat’s secretary Maulana Azizur Rahman has been re-arrested from the jail gate. I am condemning government’s repressive actions vehemently.

We are urging the concerned authorities to stop its vindictive approach and harassment and also to release all political detainees including Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, central leaders, Satkhira district Jamaat’s secretary Maulana Azizur Rahman and Rajshahi city’s Damkura thana Jamaat Ameer Abdul Latif immediately.
