Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 7th August 2023 protesting and condemning the unjust arrest of Maulana Habibullah Rumi and Khairul Islam.

“Police has arrested Maulana Habibullah Rumi from Mirpur-1 Majar road on 5th August afternoon and Md. Khairul Islam from his business institution 6th August afternoon. Maulana Habibullah Rumi is the Darus Salam Thana Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami while Khairul Islam is the president of Comilla south Sramik Kollan Federation. There was no arrest of warrants against them. By arresting them unjustifiably, police have violated the human rights. We are vehemently condemning these arrest incidents.

He stated that, according to the law, a detained person must be produced before a court within 24 hours. But we have observed with deep concern that police has produced Maulana Habibullah Rumi on 7th August, two days after his arrest.

This is a violation of rule of law. The government has exceeded the limit of law by unjustifiably arresting the leaders and activists of the opposition parties. But people are united and very aware now. The government will not be able to subdue the movement through torture and repression.

I am urging the concerned authorities to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Maulana Habibullah Rumi and Khairul Islam immediately.”
