Police denies permission to hold grand rally in Sylhet; Acting Ameer condemns

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 15th July 2023 as the administration did not give permission to Sylhet city Jamaat-e-Islami to hold its pre-scheduled grand rally today.

Sylhet city Jamaat-e-Islami had submitted an application to the metropolitan police authority on last 5th July for holding a peaceful grand rally on 15th July. Jamaat also took all-out preparation for making the program successful. But Sylhet metropolitan police informed on 14th July night about their denial of permission. We are vehemently protesting and condemning such undemocratic attitude of the local administration.

Only 6 months is left before the scheduled 12th parliamentary election. It is natural that ahead of the election, political parties will arrange rallies and gatherings. But regrettably, the government in one side is talking about holding a free, fair and credible election, while on the other, they are not allowing the opposition to organize rallies. Different democratic nations also raised voice about holding a credible and participatory election in Bangladesh. But the incumbent authoritarian government is mulling to hold another election of farce and conspiracy. In that case, the country may lead toward an unexpected violence.

We have avoided the clash and violence with the administration and declared a fresh date. We are taking preparations to hold the same rally on next 21st July. We expect that the administration of Sylhet will cooperate to make this program happened. Besides, we are urging the countrymen to raise voice against all undemocratic activities of the government.
