Journalist Golam Rabbani murdered; Matiur Rahman Akanda condemns; demands stern punishment of the killers

-Matiur Rahman Akanda

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Central Publicity Secretary Matiur Rahman Akanda issued the following statement on 19th June 2023 expressing deep shock and condolence as a journalist of Bakshiganj Upazila under Jamalpur district namely Golam Rabbani Nadim became critically injured and subsequently died because of the attack of the terrorists and hooligans last 14th June.

We have no words to condemn the brutal murder incident of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim. We have been observing with deep concern that, whenever Awami League comes to power, they try to subdue the media by murdering journalists, or by harassing and torturing or intimidating and threatening them. A statistic revealed that in the last 5 months of 2023, 101 journalists became the victim of torture nationwide. Whereas in the last 15 months, 4 journalists were killed and 226 journalists became the victims of violence and torture. These pictures reveal the volatile condition which is prevailing in the country now.

Hundreds of incidents of murdering and torturing journalists have been committed under the current regime. But none of those incidents have been tried so far. The date of submitting the investigation report in the case of the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murders has been deferred 98 times. These bad incidents are being repeated as the offenders are not tried and brought to the book. The family and relatives of journalist Golam Rabbani gave a statement repeatedly accusing the local Awami League leader and Union council chairman of this murder. Their statements also disclosed the probable murderers before the nation.

I am urging the concerned authorities to probe into the murder incident of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim and also to ensure stern punishment of the killers.
