Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana ATM Masum issued the following statement on 12th June protesting and condemning the terrorist attack against the mayoral candidate and Islami Andolon Bangladesh’s senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim during the Barisal City Corporation election today.

“The incident of attacking Mufti Syed Mohammad Faizul Karim once again proved that there is no environment and space to hold a free, fair, and credible election under the incumbent government. Such an attack against a religious personality in front of the administration in broad daylight is tragic and dreadful. We are condemning the incident vehemently.

Today’s incident also substantiated that the present election commission has failed to create an environment for holding a free, fair, and credible election. As a mayoral candidate is facing an attack on election day, it is obvious that general voters are not secured either. The opposition parties had decided not to participate in this election as they had assumed such a volatile situation earlier.

I am urging the concerned authorities to immediately arrest and punish the personnel who were involved in the incident of attacking Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim.
