Government again increases Urea fertilizer price; Acting Secretary General protests

- Maulana ATM Masum

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 12th April 2023 protesting and condemning the government's decision to increase the price of Urea fertilizer by 5 taka per kilogram.

Through a gazzate notification issued on 11th April, the government suddenly increased the urea fertilizer price by 5 taka per kilogram which is illogical and will definitely go against the public interest. We are condemning and protesting this improper decision.

Since the incumbent government came to the office, it has been regularly increasing the price of all necessary commodities. As a part of the same trend, this time, they increased the urea fertilizer price by 5 taka per kilogram. Earlier, the government had increased the price of same fertilizer in last August. Within 8 month, the price of this fertilizer has increased for the second time. Although the agriculture minister had promised not to increase fertilised price anymore. However, that had not happened too. Already the people of the country are suffering severely due to financial recession. Under such circumstances, this price hike decision will make negative impact for agriculture, the main source of national economy. This price hike decision will create pressure upon the farmers and production activities will be hampered severely. In words, the entire country, particularity the farmers will face disastrous consequences for this decision.

I am urging the concerned authorities to withdraw the illogical decision of fertilizer price hike immediately.
