Jamaat declares 50 lakh taka flood assistance for flood victims; urges government to launch relief and rescue operations

-Dr. Shafiqur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 17th June 2022 urging to extend all-out assistance to the flood victims of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Kurigram, and Lalmonirhat districts.

“The devastating flood severely affects millions of people in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. Such a water flow of water and severity is unprecedented. I am humbly seeking Almighty Allah’s help and blessing for the flood victims.

Within one and half months, Sylhet and Sunamganj districts are facing the severity of flood once again. Sylhet residents can hardly remind any such flood in their lifetime. The highway and rivers all apparently become the same. The entire part of Sunamganj town and most of Sylhet city have become submerged by flood water. Due to water flow, the power supply in all 4 districts became disrupted. Gas supply has been halted in the submerged areas. Medium size boats are running over the city roads. Most of the rural people became confined in their houses due to want of boats. People of all ages have been experiencing the crisis and severity of floods.

The flood situation of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat is almost the same. The houses, other establishments, and crops land have gone under water. People’s sufferings with their cattle know no bounds. The crisis of drinking water is prevailing everywhere. Waterborne diseases are spreading like anything. Most of the river’s water is flowing over the danger level which consequently caused river erosion as well.

Amid this critical condition, so far no effective relief and rescue activities are not visible from the government level. The government’s silent role is really shocking. They must take a stand by the side of the flood victims. It is a matter of great regret that, the flood issue is getting no importance to the government. We are urging them to declare a state of emergency over there immediately and also to launch massive relief and rescue activities in the flood-affected zone.

Under the circumstances, on behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, I am declaring flood assistance of 50 lac taka for the flood victims. Besides, I am calling upon the leaders and activists of the concerned area to extend their all-out support to the flood-hit people. It is our humble request to the solvent sections, please try to play your sincere role in this time of humanitarian crisis. Let us pray to Allah seeking His help to get rid of this situation. May Allah save us all, Ameen.

It should be added here that, on behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, a 22-member relief committee has been formed keeping the party’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum as the convenor and Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ahasanul Mahabub Zubayer as the coordinator.
