Law enforcers should not favor or oppose a political party, he adds

Matiur Rahma Akanda gives reaction to a report published in Daily Manab Zamin

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Central Publicity Department’s Secretary and party’s central executive committee member Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda has issued the following statement on 18th May 2022 in regards to a report published in Bengali Daily Manab Zamin.

On 17th May, a report published in Daily Manab Zamin titled “কড়া বার্তা ডিএমপির” (Strict Message from DMP) drew our attention. In the news, quoting a high police official, some comments have been passed about Jamaat-e-Islami which contradicts the spirit of democracy, rule of law, and freedom of speech. It is the constitutionally secured right of every citizen to hold processions, rallies, meetings, and peaceful gatherings. The constitution allows nobody to obstruct exercising such rights.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been continuing its activities in a systematic and democratic way. The registration case of Jamaat-e-Islami is subjudice. As such, it is not justified to say that Jamaat’s registration has been cancelled. Even, according to the constitution, there is no bar for an unregistered party to hold procession or rallies. Police officer’s comment in this regard is not sound constitutionally. His comment has been made targeting Jamaat-e-Islami and we are shocked by the statement.

It is the duty of the law enforcers to maintain law and order sitution of the country and simultaneously to take action against criminal offences. They should not favor or oppose any political party. We want to clarify that Jamaat does not believe in chaos and anarchy. Jamaat’s activities are disciplined, systematic, democratic and peaceful.’

We are urging the concerned quarter to be refrained from making such comment.
