Jamaat leaders and activists arrested from Rajshahi and Chittagong; Acting Secretary General demands immediate release

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 23rd October, 2021 condemning the unjustified arrest of 12 Jamaat leaders and activists of PobaUpazila under Rajshahi district and similar unlawful arrest of Chittagong’s MirshoraiSadar union’s former Ameer.

Police has arrested 12 Jamaat leaders and activists from a Siratunnabi discussion programin PobaUpazila under Rajshahi district. Earlier, they also arrested Chittagong’s MirshoraiSadar union’s former AmeerKafil Uddin Lotifi on 20th October night. Jamaat-e-Islami is not a banned party. It is a constitutionally guaranteed right of the citizen to hold religious program, meeting, procession and also to have freedom of expression. The constitution did not give any authority any power to intervene citizen’s rights. Despite that, police arrested innocent people from religious program and thus they took stance against the Sirat and the constitution of the country. While, in a separate incident, police arrested Chittagong’s MirshoraiSadar union’s former Ameer Kafil Uddin Lotifi in connection with a false case. We are protesting and condemning all these unjust incidents.

I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Rajshahi district Jamaat’s 12 activists and Chittagong’s MirshoraiSadar union’s former Ameer Kafil Uddin Lotifi immediately.
