Police arrests Chittagong district Jamaat leader; Secretary General demands immediate release

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 28 April 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of Chittagong district’s PotiaUpazila Jamaat Ameer Mukibul Islam Chowdhury Faruq.

Police has unjustifiably arrested Chittagong district’s PotiaUpazila Jamaat Ameer Mukibul Islam Chowdhury Faruq from his resident on 27 April night. There was no case or arrest warrant against him. Police has been conducting raid into the same area for last 10/12 days and arrested 11 Jamaat leaders and activists so far. In this holy month of Ramadan, the Muslims should treat other fellow Muslims softly and humanly. But instead of doing so, our law enforcement agencies are torturing and repressing the innocent people. I am condemning such unlawful arrest drives of the police forces.

The law enforcing entities are being used as the tool of government’s repression rather than serving people. But the government cannot linger its tenure by continuing such oppression. Torture, oppression and crackdown never bring positive result for anybody.

I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Mukibul Islam Chowdhury Faruq immediately
