Police arrests Narayanganj city Jamaat Ameer and veteran leader Mainuddin Ahmed; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former member of the parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 19 April 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of Jamaat’s central working committee member and Narayanganj city Ameer Maulana Mainuddin Ahmed.

Police arrested Narayanganj city Jamaat Ameer and aged religious figure Maulana Mainuddin Ahmed and 3 others at 18 April midnight. No arrest warrant had been issued against them earlier. Police has been arresting religious personalities and Jamaat leaders and activists from various places across the country in last couple of days. It can never be a civilized culture to conduct such arrest drive, torture and repression even in the holy month of Ramadan. Government’s fascist face has been exposed by such arrest incidents and crackdown. We are severely condemning government’s inhuman oppression in this sacred month.

We want to assert that no fascist government can stay in power by continuing torture and repression. It is absolutely inhuman and unlawful to arrest Muslim devotees during the sacred month of Ramadan. We are urging the government to stop such harassment immediately.

Finally, I am calling upon the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and IslamiChhatrashibir including Maulana Mainuddin Ahmed immediately and also to let them observe fasting with their family, relatives and well-wishers.
