6 laborers killed as police opened fire against peaceful demonstrators; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 17 April 2021 protesting and condemning the recent violent incident as at least six coal-based power plant workers were killed during a clash with police in Chattogram's Banshkhali area this morning.

Workers of the power plant at Banshkhali'sGandamara have been demonstrating since Friday over their dues. Suddenly police opened fire against the demonstrators and killed 6 workers on the spot. Scores of people got injured during the accident. It is natural that the laborers would expect their dues. But to open fire against them and to kill them like a bird is just unlawful, inhuman and unconstitutional. This is nothing but an exaggerated move from the government.

Law enforcer’s duty is to secure public lives and properties. But the constitution does not give them the license to kill the citizens indiscriminately. We are condemning the brutal incidents and expressing deep shock at the deaths of our fellow laborers. We are extending sympathies to the victim families.

I am urging the concerned authorities to take immediate effective steps to pay all the dues of the laborers and to take stern punitive measures against them who were involved with these brutal murders and also to pay due compensation to the victim families.
