Nationwide arrest drive continues against religious personnel and Madrasa teachers; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former member of Parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 17 April 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrests of religious personnel and Madrasa teachers across the country.

Since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, the authorities have been arresting religious personnel and Madrasa teachers indiscriminately. Police are also taking them into remand and causing sufferings. Such role of the government is really inhuman and regrettable.

In the name of political repression, government is subduing the people’s voices. In last couple of days, law enforcers arrested hundreds of religious personalities along with the teachers and students of different Madrasa (religious schools) nationwide.

It is the duty and obligation of the religious leaders to protest all kinds of anti-religious activities. But it is really painful that the concerned authorities are trying to refrain them forcefully from their moral obligations. Nationwide arrest drive against the religious personalities is shameful.

I am urging the concerned authorities to stop arrest drives and harassment against the religious personnel and Madrasa teachers and also to let them observe fasting with their families.
