9 Jamaat men arrested from Lalmonirhat; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 8 April 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 9 leaders and activists of Lamonirhat district’s KaliganjUpazila unit Jamaat including its Tushvandar union president Mozammel Haque Babul.

Police has arrested 9 leaders and activists of Lamonirhat district’s KaliganjUpazila unit Jamaat-e-Islami including its Tushvandar union president Mozammel Haque Babul. The detainees went there to attend a social gathering. There was no arrangement of meeting or discussion programs. But police filed false case against them and sent them to prison. I am condemning such initiative of the policemen.

Government has intensified its arrest drives against the opposition leaders and activists in last couple of days, particularly when the nation is celebrating 50 years of independence. The law enforcement agencies are being used as a tool of the government instead of discharging their professional duties. But repression and torture cannot bring any positive result. Government cannot stay in power forever by branding the dissident people as criminals.

I am urging the government to stop torture and arrest drive and to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Mozammel Haque Babul immediately.
