Rafiqul Islam Khan rejects Sheikh Selim’s address; urges government to try the killers of Muslim devotees

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan has issued the following statement on 3 April 2021 protesting and condemning the address of Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, which he delivered in the parliament against opposition parties including Jamaat-e-Islami.

“When the entire nation is celebrating 50 years of independence by holding various constructive programs, at that time without any instigation, police and the ruling party cadres carried attack in various places including Dhaka, Chittagong, Brahmanbaria, Munshiganj and Tangail which left at least 17 Muslim devotees killed and hundreds of people injured. Government sponsored cadres and agencies have been creating mayhem in Brahmanbaria for several consecutive days. 11 Islam loving people have been killed only in Brahmanbaria. Police also arrested hundreds of leaders and activists of various political parties including Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir. The specific day, that marked the 50 years of independence had experienced bloodshed because of the brutal repression and torture of the government.

Along with the police forces, the miscreants who had attacked the Muslims while they were praying inside the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram and Brahmanbaria, must be identified and they should be brought to the justice. It is the duty and obligation of the government.

To hold political programs is a constitutional and democratic right of every political party. By creating obstruction to those rights, the government has violated the constitution. While, Sheikh Selim’s address in this regard is nothing but a fun with the Islam loving people. We are urging the government to stop torture and repression immediately and also to take strict legal measures against those personnel who were involved with the murder incidents of Dhaka, Chittagong and Brahmanbaria.
