Jamaat leaders and activists arrested from Meherpur and Rangpur district; Secretary General demands immediate release

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 1st April, 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrests of 13 Jamaat leaders and activists from MujibnagarUpazila of Meherpur district and another 3 leaders from Rangpur city.

Police arrested 13 Jamaat leaders and activists from MujibnagarUpazila of Meherpur district including district Ameer Taj Uddin Khan, Jergis Hossain, Upazila Ameer Khan Jahan Ali, Upazila Secretary Khairul Bashar and Upazila unit women wing’s Secretary Umme Hani while holding a unit program. All of them were taken into the police station and a case was concocted instantly against them. Police also arranged a press conference to humiliate them as they claimed to recover 3 cocktails, 5 motor cycles and Islamic books from the spot.

In another arrest drive, police detained Rangpur city Jamaat’s Financial Affairs Secretary and working committee member Nurul Islam Badsha, Hazirhat thana Ameer Mashiur Rahman and thana secretary Abul Kalam Azad and subsequently lodged false case against them under special power act.

In the month of 50 years celebration of country’s independence, police arrested 257 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from different places across the country. They also shot 18 people to dead during the Independence Day. They arrested 13 party leaders and activists from Meherpur and another 3 from Rangpur and manipulated another case in order to repress the party people. We are condemning the oppressions and tortures of the government.

Instead of discharging due duties, the law enforcers are being used as a tool of the government of attaining their political purposes. But torture and oppression can not bring positive result. Government’s tendency to demonize political activists as criminals will be boomerang for them. We are urging the concerned authorities to stop such attempts and to release all the detained party leaders and activists immediately.
