Police continues arrest drives and brutal attack against the peaceful protesters; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 27 March 2021 protesting and condemning the police’s obstructions against the peaceful programs of Jamaat-e-Islami and other organizations across the country, joint attacks of the police forces and the ruling party goons against the peaceful agitators and police’s ongoing arrest drives.

Police opened fire against the peaceful protesters in different places on Friday that left at least 8 people killed and many others injured. Protesting against such violent move of the law enforcers, different platforms have arranged protest demonstrations today. But such peaceful protest programs came under attack of the police forces once again. Police carried attack in the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram which left many people injured. IslamiChhatrashibir Sylhet city unit brought out a procession today but police arrested 14 men from that procession. Police also arrested 5 activists of Hefazat-e-Islam from capital’s Vatara and another 14 from Brahmanbaria district.

By causing bloodshed in the programs marking the 50 years of country’s independence, the incumbent Awami League government launched a new stigmatized chapter of the history. The nation wants to know, why the authority is doing this? Whom they want to make satisfied? We are vehemently condemning such tyrannical steps of the government.

I am urging the concerned authorities to stop nationwide crackdown and arrest drive and to release all the detained leaders and activists immediately.
