Police continues nationwide arrest drive against Jamaat leaders and activists; Secretary General demands immediate release of the detainees

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former member of Parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 16 March 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of 14 party men from Rajshahi city, 2 from Satkhira, one from Chittagong city and one from Jhalkathi district through consecutive arrest drive in last couple of days.

Marking the 50 years celebration of our independence, all political parties of the country are observing various programs. Jamaat-e-Islami has also declared several programs and those declared programs are being implemented by the party leaders and activists. Different philanthropic programs and events are also being organized including assisting the insolvent valiant freedom fighters, providing academic assistance to the meritorious students, serving the patients, distributing financial help to the corona victim families, helping the unemployed to become employed, distributing foods among the orphans, street children and poor people, free medical camp and blood donation programs.

When the nation is observing 50 years celebration of independence, at such period, police is arresting Jamaat and Chhatrashibir leaders and activists which is really painful. Police is arresting the party men and filing false cases against them in order to obstruct the constructive activities of the organization. I am vehemently condemning such police moves.

I am urging the concerned authorities to stop the repression and crackdown at once and to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir immediately.”
