Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar expressed deep shock, concern, and outrage over the incident in which a young worker named Habibur Rahman was killed and at least 10 others were injured by law enforcement firing during a workers’ movement at Uttara EPZ in Nilphamari. He issued a statement on September 2 protesting against the incident.

In the statement, he said: “On the morning of September 2 (Monday), during a workers’ movement at Uttara EPZ in Nilphamari, a young worker named Habibur Rahman was killed and at least 10 others were injured in law enforcement firing. I extend my deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of Habibur Rahman and to the injured, and also pray seeking the forgiveness of the soul of Habibur Rahman. At the same time, I wish for a quick recovery of all the injured.

He further said: “It is inappropriate to open fire on a movement for workers’ just demands. I urge the concerned authorities to immediately bring the killers of the victim worker to justice. Alongside this, I call for ensuring proper medical treatment and compensation for the injured, reopening of the closed factories, and reinstatement of the retrenched workers in their jobs.”
