Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar issued the following statement on January 13 expressing deep concern over the proposal to increase gas prices in the industrial sector and calling for finding a way to overcome the gas crisis.
“I express deep concern over the government’s proposal to increase gas prices in the industrial sector. The country’s businessmen and industrialists have already expressed their anger over this proposal to increase gas prices. Gas prices have been increased 7 times during the fascist Awami League government’s 14-year rule. The last time the Awami League government increased gas prices was in January 2023. Due to the gas crisis, industries were running on a rationing system at that time. The gas crisis is still ongoing. To overcome this crisis, it is necessary to explore gas wells in all potential places in the country. At the same time, it is necessary to quickly overcome the gas crisis by importing gas from abroad. The gas crisis cannot be solved by increasing it’s prices. Rather, the crisis will become more serious as a result.
Therefore, we urge the government to find a way to overcome the gas crisis by withdrawing the proposal to increase gas prices for the sake of the interest of the country's industries, businesses, and economy."
