Unrest in RMG sector; one worker killed; Secretary General expresses concern

-Professor Mia Golam Parwar

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar issued the following statement on 1st October, 2024 expressing deep concern as RMG worker namely Kawsar Hossain Khan has been killed and 4 others became seriously injured during an unrest in Dhaka's Ashulia.

“On 30th September, Monday a tripartite meeting was held between the owners and the law enforcement agencies with the representatives of the Mandal Group Garments’ workers. As there was no agreement, the workers took a stand outside the factory and continued demonstration. Later workers from other factories joined them. At this time, the law enforcement agencies and the workers took a face-to-face position. The law enforcers at one point started charged batons. In response, the workers vandalized some RAB and police vehicles. Later, when the workers became more agitated, the police opened fire to bring the situation under control. During this time, 5 workers were shot and at least 30 other workers were injured. 5 bullet-hit victims were rescued and admitted to local PMK Hospital and Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. After admission, the doctor on duty declared Kawsar Hossain Khan dead. I am deeply concerned about this incident. At the same time, I pray seeking the salvation of the departed soul of Kawsar Hossain Khan and express my deepest condolences to his family and also to the families of the injured.

Amid the ongoing changing situation of the country, this incident of violence and the subsequent death of a RMG worker is not acceptable in any way. The expectation of the people of the country is that no citizen will die without trial from now on. I appeal to law enforcement agencies to deal such incidents with more patience and tolerance. They must be refrained from firing against the agitators.

If the RMG industry survives, the country will survive and the wheels of the country's economy will continue to function. I appeal to both employers and workers to work unitedly to protect the interests of this sector and to take the country forward towards the path of prosperity. All problems and crises should be resolved through amicable dialogue. I am urging the concerned authorities to conduct proper investigation of the incident in order to take legal and punitive measures against the real offenders."
