Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar has issued a statement on September 20 expressing deep concern over the death of three people in Khagrachari.
In a statement, he said, "A young man named Mamun was killed in a mob beating centering an incident of stealing a motorcycle in Khagrachari on Wednesday, September 18. On Thursday, September 19, when a protest march from Dighinala College in Khagrachari was passing through Bowalmari Bazar to protest the killing, terrorists of the UPDF (Main) attacked the march and fired 20-30 rounds of bullets. Due to this incident, the angry crowd burnt down some shops in Bowalmari Bazaar. On the same night (September 19), when a patrolling team of Khagrachari zone arrived at Shonirvor Area of Khagrachari town at 10:30 pm while shifting a critical patient, the agitated public obstructed the leadership of UPDF (main). At one point, the UPDF terrorists opened fire on the army patrolling team and the army retaliated in self-defence. It is said that three people were killed and some were injured in this incident.
He also said that this unexpected incident has created anxiety in the country. We appeal to all concerned to assist the law enforcement agencies in restoring peace, order and harmony in the three hill districts and also for defusing the ongoing tensed situation .”
