Nationwide arrest drive continues; Acting Secretary General demands release of all political detainees

-Maulana ATM Masum

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 14th October 2023 protesting and condemning the unjust arrest of 20 Jamaat leaders and activists including 10 activists of Gazipur city Jamaat.

“Jamaat’s peaceful demonstrations are being held across the country demanding the release of Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and other leaders and religious scholars, withdrawal of false cases and for restoring the caretaker government system. As a part of the centrally declared programs, Gazipur city Jamaat organized a peaceful demonstration this noon. After completing the procession, while the demonstrations were returning home, police arrested 10 of them and 10 more from various places of the country. I am vehemently condemning these unjustified arrest incidents.

After the declaration of the peaceful demonstration program, police have been continuing their raids in the houses, business institutions and working places. They are frightening their family members during these raids. The fascist government has turned the country into the biggest prison by conducting their tortures and oppression.

Jamaat-e-Islami is a systematic and democratic Islamic political party. It is the constitutional right of all parties to hold meeting, processions and rallies. No one has the right to deprive some one from availing these rights. Awami League do not believe in democracy. They want to subdue the opposition parties by crackdown and repression. The people have no respect and trust upon this government. They do not want to see this oppressor regime in office anymore.

I am urging the countrymen to raise voice against the undemocratic activities of the government. Besides, I am calling upon the government to release all detained Jamaat leaders and activists, to withdraw the false cases and to stepdown immediately for handing over power to a caretaker government.
