Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 3rd October, 2023 protesting and condemning the unjust arrests of Meherpur district Secretary Iqbal Hossain and Narsingdi district’s working committee member and city Ameer Azizur Rahman and Jamaat leader Mostafa.
“Jamaat-e-Islami Narsingdi district organized a peaceful demonstration on 3rd October demanding immediate release of Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, other leaders and religious scholars, withdrawal of all false cases, resignation of the government and the restoration of the caretaker government system. The procession ended peacefully. But following the procession, the law enforcers set barricades and searched the passengers of the auto rickshaw and other pedestrians. A panic situation was created at that time across the city. Police also arrested Narsingdi district’s working committee member and city Ameer Azizur Rahman and Jamaat leader Mostofa unlawfully.
In another incident, Meherpur district police arrested Meherpur district Secretary Iqbal Hossain, Meherpur district Sramik Kollan Federation President Abdur Rouf Mukul and former ward member Abdul Jabbar from a feast event. Police’s harassment and oppressions against the citizens are unacceptable. I am vehemently condemning these unjust arrest drives, discourteous behaviors and undue activities.
The government wants to hold another farcical election like 2014 and 2018 and thus they want to create instability in the country. Awami League believes in democracy. The countrymen have no confidence upon the fascist government. I am urging the countrymen to launch protest against the undemocratic and tyrannical activities of the government.
I am calling upon the government to release all detained leaders and activists including Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Meherpur district secretary Iqbal Hossain and Narsingdi city Ameer Azizur Rahman and other leaders and religious scholars, to withdraw all false cases and to restore the caretaker government system immediately.
