17 Jamaat leaders and activists arrested; Acting Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum issued the following statement on 10th March 2023 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of Jamaat’s 17 leaders and activists.

Police arrested Shahrasti Upazila Jamaat Ameer of Chandpur district Mostofa Kamal and 14 others leaders and activists on last 9th of March and arrested another 3 others activists from Panchagarh district on last 8th of March.

Meanwhile, Jamalpur district’s Olama department’s secretary and district’s working committee member Maulana Sayeed Bin Akbar and 4others have been conducting the Dawah (preaching activities) as a part of the centrally declared programs. At that time, they came under attack by the miscreants. The teeth of Maulana Sayeed Bin Akbar were broken in this attack. We are vehemently protesting the aforesaid incidents.

The countrymen are taking part in the movement for restoring democracy and public rights. This movement is getting intense gradually. As such the government became afraid of Jamaat-e-Islami and conducted tortures and oppression against the leaders and activists of the opposition, particularly of Jamaat-e-Islami. They have seized citizens’ freedom of speech and other fundamental rights away. Law enforcement agencies are being used as a tool of the government instead of discharging their regular duties. The countrymen think the consequence of torturing the opposition activists will not be positive for anyone.

I am urging the countrymen to raise their voices against the incumbent tyrannical government. Besides, I am calling upon the concerned authorities to stop repression and release all detained Jamaat leaders and activists immediately.
