Unprecedented irregularities in Chittagong City Polls; Secretary General condemns

Government has destroyed electoral process and democratic trends of the country

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 28 January 2021 protesting and condemning the unprecedented irregularities, rigging and farce that took place in Chittagong City Corporation election.

“The nation witnessed another farcical election in Chittagong city corporation election on last 27 January. The election took place amid unprecedented rigging, forgery, irregularities fake vote casting and expelling agents and massive violence. According to the reports published in various mass media, hundred votes casted in various poll centers. Even deceased persons have repeatedly casted their votes. The people of Bangladesh had never seen such a farce election as they saw this time. The incumbent government has destroyed the total electoral procedures in last 11 years. The people have lost their positive view about election due to controversial roles of the government and the election commission. In words, by holding such election, the government is destroying the democratic system of the country.

The people have projected another farce in Chittagong city polls watching the undemocratic and biased roles of the government and the election commission. As such, they remained refrained themselves from casting votes. Avoiding the poll centers, people have demonstrated their discomfort and no-confidence towards the government and the election commission.

We have said earlier, a convenient atmosphere for holding a fair election to be created to restore voting rights. Latest incident proved that free, fair and comfortable election is not possible under a political government.

We are calling upon the concerned countrymen to take part in the movement against the government in order to restore democracy and voting rights and also to bring back people’s confidence upon the electoral procedures.
