Police harasses janaja bound people in Chapai Nawabganj; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 18 November 2020 protesting and condemning the hindrances against the funeral prayer of Shariful Islam, the younger brother of Jamaat’s central executive committee member and Dhaka city South Jamaat Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul and the subsequent harassment of the mournful family members.

Shariful Islam, the younger brother of Jamaat’s central executive committee member and Dhaka city South Jamaat Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul has died in a hospital of the capital on 17 November morning. His dead body was taken in his native district Chapai Nawabganj for burial. But prior to their arrival over there, scores of policemen took position in their houses and issued order saying not more than 50 people will be allowed to take part in the funeral prayer. As such, huge number of people could not attend the prayer. Even the law enforcers did not allow the family men to get united and to express their mourns. Police cordoned their house at midnight and compelled the aged parents to wake up. Police also searched all rooms and toilets of the houses in search of Nurul Islam Bulbul. We have no word to condemn the harassment of the family members even in such painful period.

We do not understand police’s role as under which ground, they can create obstruction to hold a funeral prayer or can cause harassment to the family members. I am urging the fellow countrymen to raise voice against such inhuman and barbaric activities of the government.
