BFUJ President and journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi arrested; Secretary General demands immediate release

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 22 October 2020 protesting and condemning the arrest of veteran journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi.

Police has arrested the convener of all-party professional forum, the president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist and chief reporter and special correspondent of Daily Sangram from his office on 21st October evening.

The government filed case against him under Digital Act and Penal section 124 (A) in December of 2019. He secured bail from the High Court in that case. But the prosecution lodged another Non-FIR petition in order to arrest him. Police has violated human rights by arresting him ignoring the bail which had been granted in his favor. No one is safe under this fascist regime. We are vehemently condemning and protesting the arrest incident of Ruhul Amin Gazi.

Earlier, the editor of Daily Sangram and senior journalist Abul Asad was arrested and he has been kept behind the bar for 10 months. The journalists are frequently becoming the victim of the government’s oppression.

I am urging the concerned authorities to release Ruhul Amin Gazi and all other detained journalists immediately.
