Woman raped at the dormitory of Sylhet MC College; Secretary General demands stern punishment of the offenders

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 26 September 2020 protesting and condemning the rape of a woman at Sylhet MC College dormitory last night.

It is reported that the husband and wife of Shibbari area of the Dokhin Shurma area went to visit the college campus in Tilagarh area in Sylhet city in their private car, which was intercepted by a thugs of ruling party’s student wing Chhatra League around 8:00pm yesterday. They forcefully took them to the hostel, tied the husband and raped the wife. Poilice later rescued the woman in a critical condition. This atrocious incident is a shame for the entire nation. We are protesting and condemning this brutal incident. This incident proves that people are not safe in this country to move. Even their lives are no more secured. Earlier, on 3 October of 2016, Chhatra League leader Badrul chopped Khadiza Akhtar Nargis, a student of Sylhet Government Women’s College. But still those incident remains untried.

Though all the academic institutions and dormitories of the country have been closed since last March due to covid-19 pandemic. It is not clear, amid such a shutdown situation, how these ruling party students could stay inside the dormitories. Though there are explicit allegations against the Chhatra League activists and their anti-social activities, police are not taking any steps to resist them because of their ruling party affiliation. Police carried a raid inside the dormitories last night and recovered lethal weapons from Chhatra League controlled rooms.

I am urging the concerned authorities to arrest all the offenders who were involved with this barbarous rape incident and also to ensure their exemplary punishments immediately.
