Price of onion hiked alarmingly once again; Secretary General blames government for its failure to control hoarders

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 16 September 2020 protesting the abnormal price hike of onions nationwide.

“Price of all the essential commodities are on the rise. Within a day, onion price has exceeded 100 taka per kilogram. Just a day before, onion was sold 40-50 taka per kilogram. Different sections of the government boastfully claimed that plenty of onions are being stored in the country. Despite that, such alarming price hike of onion is mysterious.

There is no valid reason behind such abnormal price hike of onion. Actually, it happened as the government failed to strict its monitoring upon the hoarders and dishonest traders. Some profit-sucking traders are often creating artificial crisis of commodities in order to snatch away crores of taka from the people. Several months back, they also took away around 3 hundred crore takas from the market by making artificial crisis of onion. This government does not care for public interest and they cannot control the price of the essentials anymore. Government’s utmost failure, corruptions and mismanagements are being exposed in all sectors.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities to take effective measures for curbing the price hike of onions and other essentials and also to bring the prices of the commodities within people’s reach.
