Government plays hide and seek game with the controversial statue; judicial probe demanded

Secretary General calls to remove the Greek Goddess’s statue from Supreme Court’s Annex building area

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 28th May, 2017 expressing deep dissatisfaction and resentment at the reinstalling of the controversial statue of the Greek Goddess in front of the Annex Building of the Supreme Court after removing it from the main premise.

“Along with the countrymen, we are also aggrieved and worried with the tricky game with the controversial statue of the Greek Goddess as it had been removed from the Supreme Court premise and last night it was reinstalled once again in front of the Annex Building.

The government became compelled to remove the controversial statue of the Greek Goddess at the verge of huge protest of the religion loving countrymen, particularly the religious scholars and Islamic parties. But then again, being instigated by some vested quarters, why the authority is provoking the crisis by reinstalling the statue that is not clear to the people. Such a hide and seek game with this statue is not expected at all.

In its report titled ‘Lady Justice Reinstalled’, published today in national English daily, ‘The Daily Star’ the Attorney General stated that he did not know anything about the relocation and the chief justice was also not informed about it. The countrymen want to know, then on whose order this controversial statue has been reinstalled in front of the Annex Building? Without the permission of the appropriate authority, who has installed the statue over there?

His comment hints at the existence of a vested quarter within the government which is playing tricky game with this statue in order to create chaos and anarchy in the country. We are not acknowledged what relation is actually there between Bangladesh Supreme Court, the judiciary and the statue of the Greek Goddess.

I am urging to conduct a judicial investigation into the incident and to punish those personnel who are involved with this incident. I am also calling upon the concerned authorities to resolve the problem properly by removing the statue of the Greek Goddess from the Annex Building area immediately.”
