Bangladesh government requests Facebook to make NID info mandatory; another step to curb social media

Bangladesh Police have requested Facebook to make it mandatory for the users to provide information of the national identity card or passport while opening an account.

The request was made to Facebook’s safety manager Vikram Langeh on Monday at a bilateral meeting on combating extremism in Dhaka on the sidelines of an international police chief conference.

Assistant inspector general at the police headquarters Moniruzzaman said they requested Facebook to bring posts on fanatic religious campaigns and violence against women to the attention of police.

An official will be assigned to maintain contact with Facebook when needed, the police had suggested.

"Vikram said they would help if it did not conflict with Facebook's policy," Moniruzzaman added.
