‘BCL men’ threat to rape female quota protester

Teacher and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday demanded punishment of five BCL men for allegedly threatening to rape a female student who is a participant of quota reform movement on the campus.

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, is opposing the quota protesters and its activists were reportedly engaged in attack on the demonstrators including teachers.

The accused BCL men were identified as JU unit BCL vice president Hamza Rahman and activists - Ishqat Harun Aqib of Bangla department, Jahid Hasan Imon of Institution of Information Technology, Masud Rana of Microbiology department and Rony Bhoumik.

Around 200 teachers and students of the university under the banner of "Government and Politics Department Family" formed a human chain in front of the Amar Ekushey of the campus around11:00am and raised the demand.

Addressing the rally, professor KM Mohiuddin of department said "This is very sad for us that the students of our university are threatening to rape other female students".

He demanded immediate punishment of the BCL men who issued the threat on the social media.

On Sunday, a female organiser of quota reform movement of the university filed a complaint of 'sexual harassment with the proctor's office.

JU proctor Sikder Zulkarnain said "We handed over the complaint to the university's ‘Anti-sexual harassment cell’ and they will probe into the matter.”
